| Return to Table of Contents | A Short History of the Historical Harp Society Classes in historical harp were first offered in the United States at the Amherst Early Music Festival (AEM) by Judit Kadar. Judit had originally attended AEM as a recorder player, but she convinced AEM Director Valerie Horst that "Harps are important!" and that harp classes should be offered. Judit and Cheryl Ann Fulton were the first harp faculty members at AEM. In 1983, with Ms. Horst's encouragement, the first Historical Harp Conference was held. The goal of this annual event is to bring together researchers, performers, students, and builders of historical harps to exchange information and share ideas. The conference and the workshop became annual events, and in 1990, participants decided that the Historical Harp Society should be formed. Within a year, incorporation was achieved, and the Society began operations with an eight member Board of Trustees and four officers. The annual Board and Membership meetings are held during the Conference. Beginning in 1992, the annual workshop and conference has been held at some sites away from Amherst Early Music, in order to better serve our membership. We have met in Berkeley CA, Evanston IL, San Francisco CA, Cleveland OH, and Madison WI. The society has published a newsletter under various names and formats since 1991. In 2005 the society transitioned to a stable format two publication system of a Bulletin for member and society news and a Journal for scholarly research. Back issues of publications are available in hard copy and on the member's only area of this website. A website was active since 1997 but was substantially revised and expanded in 2006. The society has developed and supported a few ongoing research projects, sanctioned affiliated events, and hosted numerous scholars and performers at the annual workshop and conference. Details regarding ongoing projects, recent activities, and past events are available on the website. The enthusiastic and gifted members of the HHS complete almost all society functions on a volunteer basis. Additional participation is welcome at any time! |
